Scorpio: The myth behind your sign

There is a constellation in the sky that shines with particular brilliance, it is said to be the savage hunter Orion taken up into heaven after his death. The gigantic and brutal Orion was born in a very strange way: it is said that one day Zeus, Poseidon and Hermes were on their way to find the king of Tanagra. They stopped by Hyrieus’ house. Hyrieus was so generous with his guests that he killed the only animal he had, an ox. Hyrieus was not aware that his guests were gods.

The gods wanted to reward Hyrieus' generosity by granting him a wish. Hyrieus' biggest desire was to have a child. The gods told him to bury the hide of the bull he had sacrificed to them and to put the semen into it. After tenth months, Orion was born or rather arose from the hearth, a giant who began to create a lot of troubles. He seems to have stormed across all Boeotia after the seven daughters of Atlas who were only saved in the end because they were transformed into the seven stars of the Pleiades.

One day Orion, intoxicated by wine, raped the wife of his stepfather, the king of Tangra, who, blinded by anger, also blinded Orion, tearing out his eyes. However, he was still a giant of divine origin, so he was offered a way out; it was prophesied that if he showed his empty orbs  to the sun he would be cured. The blinded hero followed the sound of the Cyclops' hammer till he reached Lemnos, the island of Hephaestus, who taking pity on him, gave him Kedalion, one of his men, to be his guide to the abode of the sun.

Placing Kedalion on his shoulders, Orion proceeded to the east, and there meeting the sun-god, was restored to sight by his rays. He recovered, but his bad character remained the same, and he began hunting and killing all the animals of the earth, until the infinite patience of Gaia finished. She created a small animal, black as pitch, armed with a sting, a scorpion which stung him to death and they flew together to heaven and in the clear nights we can see them shine : the Stars of Orion and Scorpio.
