The Scorpion in Relationships

Generally speaking, Scorpio is a creature of deep and mind blowing passion. A relationship has to be the eruption of a volcano, or it’s just not doing it for Scorpio. Sexuality, jealousy, love that burns the heart and tears the soul. You will not see it on Scorpio, who is a master of hiding emotions, but you will feel it.

Even if it seems to be ordinary and plain, a love affair with Scorpio is something to be remembered for life – also if it’s just a one night stand. Scorpio thrives on everything emotional – anxiety, longing, fear, attraction, satisfaction. All feelings of the human palette, and then some. This love story has to express them all. Otherwise Scorpio isn’t attracted at all, in spite of the grand appetite.

Compatibility with fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)

Energies are undoubtedly deeply different: the subtle and a bit turbid energies of Scorpio and the hot-blooded and turbulent, but clear, honest and straightforward energies of Fire must find a way of getting along.

However, since Fire natives are simple-minded and spontaneous, they can help Scorpio drop their inborn aversions and forget their obsession for control; needless to say, Fire can’t control and hates control at all levels.

Scorpio shares two planets with Aries, Mars and Pluto, so energetically they can understand each other quite well, even though in Aries the egocentric and instinctive side prevails, while in Scorpio the inquiring and restraining side which is already able to control impulses and instincts. However, they are both passionate, and love risk and challenges, so they can find common ground that makes Aries more cautious, thoughtful and aware of their strength, and Scorpio more straightforward and light-hearted, more inclined to open up to others.

Of course, their coexistence is not easy at all, but they can share their world and qualities and give life to a quite interesting fusion.

Leo and Sagittarius too can offer Scorpio their precious gifts, which are genuine generosity and above all confidence and entrustment, two very uncommon words in the vocabulary of Scorpio natives.

As for the Fire signs, they can learn from Scorpios to better control and channel their energies, and become shrewder and more patient.

Needless to say, they must avoid power struggles, since all of these signs don’t like losing and find it hard to admit their mistakes and do an about-turn: if they challenge each other and never give up, it can turn out a hopeless match for everyone, but above all for the relationship, which would become a boxing ring.

The shadow lies in fact in power and fight, which can draw them into dangerous and fatal traps.

Compatibility with earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)

The energies involved in the relationship between Scorpio and Earth signs are quite similar, they have both an introverted nature, so dialogue and understanding are possible.

Earth needs security, but Scorpio does as well, and if they do not recognize it they end up tangled up in manipulative dynamics through which they can have control over something that escapes them.

Of course, values are different and, if on one hand Scorpio can share good dialectic, sensuality and love for all forms of pleasure with the opposite sign of Taurus (even though the idea of pleasure is more tormented and twisted for Scorpios), they need to find some common ground with Virgo and Capricorn.

With Virgo there can be great difficulties on an emotional and instinctive level; the powerful dynamics of Scorpio often make them feel puzzled and they see Scorpios as rough and quite “rude” people, which is unbearable to Virgos; also, they don’t share the same moral views. Virgo is more respectful of rules and can hardly put up with Scorpio’s love for transgression. On the other hand, Scorpios are bothered by the lack of empathy, since they truly need this kind of exchange and can perceive this emotional distance as a “detachment”.

Of course, Earth is actually not cold and Water will have to moisten it and make it softer to allow its emotional world to open up.

With Capricorn they can share ambitions and the need for self-fulfillment, and this can lead them to be supportive and sympathetic with each other: there are lots of professional partnerships between these two signs. However, Capricorn needs clarity and, even though they can look so strong that they don’t need to ask for anything or want for explanations of any kind, they don’t like the hidden strategies and impulsiveness of Scorpio and they can’t handle it, so they choose to stay away.

This is the great difference between Water and Earth: Water needs involvement and strong passion but it is also very “personal”, gives emotions and takes them back, regardless of the other party; Earth is more “impersonal” and finds it hard to handle this rollercoaster so they tend to protect themselves and disconnect from these dynamics.

What can they learn from each other? Earth can learn from Water to get more involved and become softer, more flexible and empathic, so that it can feel more deeply and be more at ease with its emotional world; on the other hand, Scorpio can learn to be more detached in order to leave their power dynamics and hidden aggressiveness behind.

If they find an agreement, they can be very strong and resilient together, able to face great challenges and be reciprocally supportive; Earth can offer a lot on a practical level as well, and Scorpio can teach a lot on an emotional level. They can be “soft rock” together.

The shadow lies in detachment and power struggles; the first one concerns Earth, which can become really aloof and almost cynical, the second one concerns Scorpios. Both Scorpio and Taurus share a great “fear of losing”, so strong tension and jealousy are likely to arise.

Compatibility with air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)

The union between Scorpio and Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) can be certainly interesting, but not easy. Air needs freedom and detachment, therefore does not put up with emotional involvement so much, especially excessive drama and intensity, which are perceived as an infringement of their privacy. As for Scorpio, they can learn from Air to leave their inner twisted turmoil behind, which often makes them restless and distressed.

Scorpio and Gemini share Pluto and Mercury, which appear to be more connected with the evolution of your own mind and identity in the Air sign, while they become more sophisticated and able to go down in depth and seize the contradictions between the inside and the outside in Scorpio.

Anyway, some dynamics are similar, even though the need of Geminis for some kind of light-heartedness is rejected by Scorpios as “immaturity”. But they both can be skilled “players”: Geminis are more into comedy, Scorpios into tragedy.

However, all in all, Geminis can hardly put up with certain emotional games that they can’t really prevent and handle, while Scorpios find it hard to deal with Gemini’s emotional detachment and their need to enter and exit things quickly and dynamically.

Similar scenarios with Libra and Aquarius; they share with Libra the need for relationships so they can find common ground, provided that Scorpio behaves ethically and Libra stops being so picky and formal, something that Scorpios hate so much; the natives often freak Libra out with their ups and downs, since they destabilise a sign that is always searching for an inner balance between the real and ideal, between mind and emotions.

The square between Scorpio and Aquarius makes things more complicated: the sign ruled by Uranus feels the intense emotional entanglement as a restriction to their freedom. Scorpio will try to make Aquarius feel guilty, but guilt trip is often unknown to this sign, just because they avoid being dragged into anything that can hinder their true freedom; Aquarius simply tends to escape certain contorted dynamics and just breaks free from every situation that they cannot understand or that are restrictive.

Of course, Air is very mental and is terrified by the excessive instinctiveness of Scorpio. A favourable connection could lead Air to know better the deep human nature, which it often escapes by backing away in its mind and rationalising everything, even what can’t be rationalised; Scorpio can help Air explore its inner world and discover unbelievable things. Air can help Scorpio be more detached and get rid of everything that blocks their emotional and psychic fabric; the difference lies in the clash between the excessively “personal” side of Scorpio and the totally “impersonal” side of Air.

Compatibility with water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)

Scorpio and the Water signs are certainly very much in synch on an emotional level, their connection will be very intense and, at least in the beginning, will make them all feel “at home”, able to float on the same wavelength, which they only can perceive, and which nurtures their need for pathos.

However, things are not necessarily as simple as they may seem; in fact, Water signs can get entangled in deep dynamics of manipulation and emotional blackmail, just because issues of entanglement and clinging are always involved, and if at the beginning they can seem reassuring, afterwards they will bring about weird hate-love mingles that won’t allow the two identities to really disengage.

Actually, power and control, as well as emotional abuses, can become powerful weapons for the Water signs, who are afraid of losing contact as soon as the other steps back emotionally and psychologically. This kind of problems often arise between Scorpios, and between Scorpio and Cancer, and lead to a need for reassurance which for Cancer is focused on the presence and continuous support of the other, while for Scorpio reassurance is mostly seen as “emotional reliability”.

Cancer is very receptive, seizes every slight change and instantly perceives the withdrawal of the other, but they tend to express their needs more childishly. Scorpios are shrewder and one of their main defenses is that of hiding their need for the other even when is very strong.

Water signs often get entangled in such stifling situations that deep resentment is made necessary to compensate for the emotional codependency that has developed between the two and that actually prevents the relationship form growing. Basically, the relationship becomes something like “if I hate them I don’t need them”, which only appears to be the resolution of a destructive symbiotic dynamic. Subtle tormentor-victim relationships between these signs can hide a codependency that is hardly admitted.

Things are different with Pisces, since the sign ruled by Neptune does not easily get entangled in oppressive dynamics; they tend to escape and automatically detach from “highly restrictive passions”. They can hardly focus their attention and emotions on one single person for a long time; Pisces are curious and need freedom, so they often disconnect.

However, they can perfectly play the role of victim because it fits their unresolved and troubled needs for “elevation”.

Needless to say, power struggles can dominate for years between two Scorpios, also in the bedroom, in a strong fight whose pointless and destructive aim is that of defining who will be the one to give up.

When the Water signs manage to become independent, then deep relationships can be created between them, with psychological and emotional exchanges supported by mutual freedom and willingness to support each other in one’s inner and external personal battles. In order to achieve that, they must get over their fear of losing, which leads them to create symbiotic relationships that will only last at the expense of the identity of the two individuals.
